MISSIONS
OUR
MISSION
To know Jesus and make him known in Normaltown, Athens, and the world.
Our mission is the simplest possible statement of how we will accomplish our vision. In order to stay rooted, to reflect, and to reach, we will strive to know Jesus above all else. The cross will be central to who we are and how we live and love. Furthermore, the cross is what we will preach and promote as we go out into our spheres of influence: our homes, our neighborhoods, our schools, our places of work.

LOCAL
Downtown Ministries
The Downtown Ministries story began as an initiative out of Redeemer Presbyterian Church, with a visionary group of believers who saw the stark dichotomies of the Athens community and felt God’s call to act.
What started with a volunteer-led youth football team in 2003 has grown into a multi-faceted ministry that includes a fully accredited K-5 Christian School, a robust sports program with 5 seasonal offerings, a community kitchen and volunteer programs that engage more than 400 volunteers annually.

Jacob Tanner
RUF Intern at Belmont University
The Lord called me to faith right before I started college in the middle of the pandemic. While I initially had no discipleship, I quickly found it not only at Good Shepherd, but also at RUF at UGA. At RUF, I learned what it meant to pick up my cross and follow Jesus. I believe in the importance of college ministry and now feel called to walk in the steps of the interns before me and serve the Lord at Belmont University!

Alexander Torjak
RUF Intern at University of Central Florida
At UGA, RUF radically changed my life by welcoming me into a strong Christian community rooted in the scriptures and the life of Jesus Christ. Now, I am going to be a RUF Intern at UCF – I desire to become a lifelong disciple maker and faithful follower of Jesus before entering the engineering workforce. I will disciple students, organize RUF events, engage in student bible studies, and invite new students and unbelievers into our community. Here, they can experience the love of Jesus and read the Bible. Our ministry at UCF aims to reach unbelievers and equip Christians to enter the workforce to walk with Jesus for a lifetime! I know my Creator made me to create, whether it be disciples or electronics, and I want to answer God's call.

Grace Kreul
RUF Intern at University of Tennessee, Chattanooga
Reformed University Fellowship's mission is to engage and disciple the next generation of leaders so that when they graduate, they enter the world bolstered by Gospel truth, ready to live as servant-leaders in their churches, jobs, families, and communities. This looks like spending all day on campus and around Chattanooga with students, meeting one-on-one, building relationships, sharing the Gospel, assisting with weekly bible studies, driving students to large group meetings, and showing the love of Christ.

Abby Agan
RUF Intern at University of California, Berkeley
RUF at UC Berkeley exists to reach anxious, burnt-out students with the life-changing hope of the Gospel and equip them to love Jesus for a lifetime. Abby's role as an intern includes organizing events, leading bible studies, and meeting one-on-one with female students--particularly freshmen and transfers who are navigating a uniquely lonely and overwhelming season of life. It's an honor to learn their stories, witness God's work in their lives, and point them towards the grace of Jesus.

Molly Kerr
RUF Intern at University of Alabama
Thank you to Good Shepherd for supporting me as I intern for RUF at the University of Alabama for the next two years, reaching students with the gospel and equipping them for a life of being a disciple of Jesus! I graduated from UGA in spring 2024 and absolutely cherished being a part of Good Shepherd since fall 2022! I am thankful to be financially and prayerfully supported in my ministry venture by my church that means so much to me, with people that have welcomed me in so well! RUF was such a sweet place for me in my four years of college where God placed people in my life who wanted to walk through life with me as a beloved child of God. I want others to experience such a loving community of believers in college like I did, so I’m exited to see what the Lord does through this RUF internship!

Clare Knudsen
Ministry Fellow, RUF National
I have been serving as an Intern Care Assistant in the RUF intern department ever since completing three years of the internship myself. By regularly connecting with the 20+ college ministry interns across the country in my care group, I work to provide a previously unavailable level of personalized support, whether it be for fundraising strategies, staff conflict resolution, or best ministry practices. In addition, my ongoing training at Western Seminary in clinical mental health counseling is equipping me with effective helping skills and insights that I pass on to my interns as they seek to best care for their students holistically. My goal is to make ministry more sustainable for my interns as they hear that they are not alone in learning to do this work well.

Ashley Lanier
RUF intern at U.S. Air Force Academy
I am a second year RUF intern at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado where I minister to the cadets! This looks like helping facilitate weekly large group worship services, leading small groups, one on one discipleship, event planning, and lots of admin work!

Sophia Barkhouse
RUF Intern at Appalachian State University
At RUF Appalachian State, I serve as an RUF intern for the women in the ministry, specifically the underclassmen. I meet with students one on one throughout the week, spend time on campus meeting new students, lead Bible studies/discussion groups, help lead worship for our weekly large group meetings, and a lot of other random fun things. I’m starting my second year with this ministry, and I’m very excited to see how God works through the relationships He blessed me with! I love the students here – their love of God’s creation, their wonderful humor, the time they make for the people in their lives, their love and pride over the community they are a part of in Appalachia… What an honor it has been to hear bits and pieces of their stories! If you’re interested in hearing about specifics of the ministry here or encouraging stories from the past year, please feel free to reach out!

Emily Cartledge
RUF Campus Staff at James Madison University
Hello Good Shepherd! After graduating from UGA in 2020 (Go Dawgs!), I began working as an intern with RUF at JMU, before becoming Campus Staff in 2022. Whether sitting down with a student for a cup of coffee, teaching a small group, showing up at a Large Group, putting on fun events, or coming alongside them in their moments of doubts and suffering, I get to show up for the students at JMU and point them to the hope found in the gospel. What a privilege and joy it is to share that good news to the lost and the suffering! If you are interested in hearing more about the work happening here in Harrisonburg or joining my support team, please feel free to reach out so I can add you to my newsletter, or sign up to give through the link provided. Thank you for your support and prayers!
GLOBAL
Edgewood Ministries
We provide teaching, training, mentoring, and coaching to African pastors, church planters, lay church leaders, and Christian businessmen/women for the work of God's Kingdom in Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond. We have a fast-growing network of African pastors and church planters in Uganda and South Sudan who are receiving training and mentoring through Edgewood. Our four areas of ministry focus are: 1) biblical/theological training for church leaders; 2) University campus ministry (RUF-Global); 3) Economic development through missional business projects; 4) church planting. At the center of all the training we do is assisting Christian leaders in Africa in formulating a theologically-driven philosophy of ministry that transcends cultures and brings the life-changing power of the Gospel to the hearts of people right where they are. We believe the Church in East Africa has incalculable potential for global Great Commission impact, but it is our conviction that well-equipped African leadership is essential for this vision to be realized.
Missionary in the Middle East
We also support a missionary in the Middle East. If you have any questions about how to stay in touch or support them, email missions@goodshepherdathens.com.
